That They May Be One: Rome and the Eastern Catholics | First Things

From back in 2012, this interesting reflection from Tim Kelleher writing in First Things has been brought to our attention. In light of Pope Francis’ drive both for greater local initiative and responsibility and for his evident respect for the Christian East, including the Eastern Catholics for which he was responsible in Argentina and the Orthodox with whom he is keen to recover unity, this is worth reading again.

Is the Oriental Congregation in Rome more to be concerned that Eastern Catholics conform to the Latin discipline of celibacy outside their patriarchal territories and intervention from Latin Rome within them, or is it concerned that a globalised Church in a globalised world works mutually and in harmony towards the common task of proclaiming and living the Catholic faith of the Universal Church?
